Milton (population approximately 30,000) is an area of Fulton County, Georgia which became incorporated as a city on December 1, 2006. Milton was created out of the entire unincorporated northwestern part of northern Fulton County.
Milton was not named for any of its historic communities, but rather because northern Fulton County is almost entirely the former Milton County, which was in turn named for either John Milton or Homer V. Milton.
Former communities within Milton's city limits include Birmingham, Field's Cross Roads, and Crabapple.
Along with Johns Creek, this marks only the second time in Georgia history that a city was created by means of a voter referendum, the first being Sandy Springs.
Students who live in Milton attend public schools in the Fulton County School District. Approximately 2,225 students attend Milton High School. Milton High School has received some notable awards for academic achievement. It is the only high school in Georgia that received the prestigious No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon Schools distinction for 2008 from the U.S. Department of Education. Newsweek Magazine listed it among America’s Best 100 High Schools.
Adjacent to Milton High School is Northwestern Middle School, which was established in 1996 with a student body of approximately 1,235 students.
Two other middle schools located in Milton are Hopewell Middle School and Crabapple Middle School. Elementary grade schools include Cogburn Woods Elementary School, Crabapple Crossing Elementary School and Summit Hill Elementary School.
